March is Women’s History Month—a time to honor the resilience, strength, and contributions of women throughout history. It is also an opportunity to spotlight the challenges that many women continue to face, particularly single mothers who are struggling with housing insecurity. At Family Promise of the Coastal Empire, we recognize the unique barriers women-led households experience and are committed to providing them with the support they need to achieve stability and independence.
The Reality of Housing Insecurity for Women-Led Households
Women, particularly single mothers, are disproportionately affected by housing instability. According to the National Women’s Law Center, over 80% of single-parent households in the United States are led by women, and nearly 30% of these families live below the poverty line. For many, the cost of housing far exceeds their income, leaving them vulnerable to eviction, homelessness, or unsafe living conditions.
Economic disparities further compound this issue. Women still earn, on average, 84 cents for every dollar earned by men, with an even greater gap for women of color. This wage gap makes it significantly more difficult for female-led households to afford housing, childcare, healthcare, and other basic necessities. As a result, many women are forced to make impossible choices—pay rent or buy groceries, afford childcare or keep the lights on. The financial strain often pushes women and their children into cycles of poverty and homelessness.
How Family Promise Provides a Path Forward
At Family Promise of the Coastal Empire, we see firsthand the impact that systemic barriers have on women-led households. That’s why our programs are designed to not only provide immediate relief but also create sustainable pathways to long-term stability.
Emergency & Transitional Housing – We offer safe and secure housing solutions for families facing homelessness, ensuring that mothers and their children have a stable place to stay while they work towards independence.
Comprehensive Case Management – Each family receives personalized case management that addresses their specific needs, from securing employment to financial literacy training.
Career & Educational Support – Many single mothers struggle to find stable employment due to a lack of resources for career advancement. We provide job readiness training, connections to workforce development programs, and assistance in securing higher-paying jobs.
Affordable Housing Initiatives – Through partnerships with landlords and local organizations, we help families find and maintain affordable, long-term housing solutions.
Childcare & Family Support Services – We recognize that access to childcare is one of the biggest hurdles single mothers face. Our programs connect families to childcare assistance, parenting resources, and community networks to help ease the burden.
Breaking Barriers & Empowering Women
Women’s History Month reminds us of the strength and determination of women who have fought for equality, rights, and opportunities. Yet, the fight is far from over. Women-led households continue to face financial hardships, wage inequality, and housing insecurity at alarming rates.
At Family Promise of the Coastal Empire, we stand with these women and their families, providing them with the tools and resources to break free from the cycle of homelessness. With community support, advocacy, and direct action, we can work together to ensure that all women—regardless of their financial or housing status—have a fair chance at a secure and prosperous future.
